Behind Our Business
MEET THE MAKER
I’m Katherine, a proud child of the 1960s, born in Yorkshire — land of tea, sheep, and a textile heritage so strong it could practically weave its own stories. From the moment I could safely hold a pair of scissors, I’ve been stitching, sewing, and making my way through life.
When I was three, my family whisked me off to the Netherlands, where I learned to ice skate on frozen dykes and stay creative even when the weather made you want to hibernate under a mountain of wool. Eventually, we returned to England, landing in Huddersfield — a town famous for weaving and wool textiles. It was there that I launched my first mini sewing empire from a little table at the end of our driveway, driven by the entrepreneurial spirit of a child wanting to fund a sweet shop habit.
Fast-forward a few decades, and not much has changed: I’m still working with fabrics, only now my “little table” is digital and a lot bigger.
From Life’s Plot Twists to Dizzy Co Designs
Life stitched me together with as many knots as smooth seams, but every thread led me to where I am today. In 2014, I packed up and headed to France, buying a run-down smallholding with a farmhouse in desperate need of love. Between rebuilding walls and wrangling weeds, Dizzy Co Designs was born.
Named after my much-loved, opinionated Westie, Dizzy, the brand became my creative outlet. Infused with a little sparkle of Yorkshire grit and a dash of French chill, I opened a shop and bravely attempted to speak French (badly, but with enthusiasm!). When Covid hit in 2020, we made the hard choice to sell up, return to good old Blighty, and begin again.
Sadly, my beloved Dizzy crossed the rainbow bridge, but her spirit lives on. Back in the UK, I returned to my textile roots. Today, I breathe new life into soft furnishings, specializing in upholstery, curtain alterations, and custom cushions and pads. You can find my handmade work at local artisan markets, agricultural shows, and online.
What I Do:
I turn gorgeous fabrics into practical, beautiful treasures for your home. Every piece I work on is stitched with history, heritage, and a cheeky sense of humour. Now, I am proud to bring my life’s passion for fabrics and bespoke design directly to my new studio at The Old Sawmills in Middlemarsh, Sherborne, creating beautiful, custom furnishings for homes across Dorset.
