There is something incredibly rewarding about looking past decades of wear and tear to see the hidden potential in a piece of vintage furniture. Recently in our Dorset upholstery workshop, we took on a classic mid-century modern armchair that had definitely seen better days, but possessed fantastic structural bones.

Instead of a quick cosmetic cover-up, we wanted to give this mid-century gem a top-tier, down-to-the-frame restoration. Here is a look at how this transformation came together, stage by stage.

Stage 1: Stripping Back to the Foundations

The beautiful chair stripped back and wood work lovingly restored by its owner before we took over for work to begin.

Stage 1: Fully stripped back to the bare wood. Before rebuilding the comfort, we always inspect, clean, and tighten the vintage frame joins first.

Stage 2: Rebuilding a Traditional Spring Foundation

With the frame stabilised, it was time to reconstruct the heavy-duty seat suspension. Unlike modern mass-produced furniture that relies on cheap elastic, this classic mid-century chair uses a traditional, robust coil spring system designed to last a lifetime.

Stage 2: Precision craftsmanship. Securing the five heavy coil springs to the steel support straps before hand-lashing them into place with traditional upholstery cordage.

We began by securing the original structural foundation: heavy steel straps running across the bottom of the frame. Resting on these steel supports are five substantial coil springs. To prevent them from shifting or clicking, we meticulously aligned and lashed the coils together using a series of interlocking knots made from incredibly strong, traditional upholstery cordage. This creates an incredibly durable, flexible foundation that contours perfectly while maintaining its shape.
