We often talk about the history and character that comes with antique furniture restoration, but every so often, a project comes into our Middlemarsh workshop that lets us blend traditional craftsmanship with a wonderful sense of fun. That is exactly what happened when a client from the beautiful village of Cerne Abbas, Dorset, approached us with a pair of classic leather wingback chairs.

The Challenge: Preserving the Patina of Antique Furniture

The chairs themselves were magnificent, boasting years of beautiful, natural patina that you simply cannot replicate with new materials. However, the original leather seat cushions had completely worn out and were no longer comfortable or usable.

When discussing the furniture reupholstery options, the client made an excellent design choice. He knew that trying to replace the old cushions with brand-new leather would look completely out of place, as the fresh leather would clash with the aged patina of the chair frames. Instead, he wanted to go in an entirely different direction: a custom fabric seat cushion.

Choosing the Perfect Bespoke Fabric and Patterns

This choice led to a lengthy and highly enjoyable discussion about upholstery fabric styles, textures, and patterns. The client had a clear vision for his home interior. He wanted the new cushions to be bright, vibrant, and designed to add a genuine sense of fun and personality to the room.

Just as we were narrowing down the final choices, the client caught me a little by surprise. Rather than picking a specific pattern himself, he looked at me and suggested something unexpected: he wanted me to surprise him.

Handcrafting a Custom Soft Furnishing Surprise

Taking on that creative freedom, I carefully selected a premium interior fabric that would respect the quality of the wingback frames while delivering that burst of joy he was looking for. I went to work handcrafting the first bespoke cushion. When the client came to see the completed first chair, he was absolutely over the moon with the result. In fact, he was so thrilled that he left the workshop incredibly excited to see what his second cushion surprise would be.

The project turned out to be an absolute triumph. He was so pleased with how both of the unique, handcrafted cushions transformed his living space that he actually ended up ordering a third surprise cushion. Now, he has a collection of custom soft furnishings that he can rotate on a regular basis to keep the room feeling fresh and dynamic.

Frequently Asked Questions About Antique Chair Restoration

Can you reupholster an antique leather wingback chair with fabric instead of new leather?

Absolutely. Many owners of vintage leather chairs choose to replace worn-out leather cushions with high-quality interior fabrics. Doing so allows you to preserve the original, beautifully aged leather patina on the outer frame of the chair while introducing fresh colours, bold textures, and exceptional comfort to your living space.

How do I choose the right upholstery fabric for a heritage wingback chair?

When updating a classic heritage piece, look for premium, heavy-weight interior fabrics such as traditional tapestries, wools, or heavy linens that complement the chair's historic character. Because wingback chairs feature dramatic curves and deep seating, selecting a pattern or texture that enhances its iconic shape will completely transform the feel of the room.

Is it worth restoring and reupholstering old family heirloom chairs?

Yes. High-quality vintage and antique furniture was built using traditional joinery and solid timber frames that far surpass the structural quality of mass-produced modern furniture. Investing in professional furniture restoration and bespoke reupholstery not only saves a sentimental family piece but ensures it structurally lasts for generations to come.
